The serial port on most computers, I think, is male, so you will need two female plugs ('sockets'?) to make an NMC. You could use a standard serial cable and get a Female/Female gender changer to make the male end female and use an RS232 jumper box to wire up the adaptor. Then the cable can be used in both ways.
